Making the Team
Part 4
“Who is back?” interjected Yavan who had to repeat himself so loudly that the boys froze and turned once they heard him.
“Uh…” They hesitated, sharing a confused glance. “Menzo. And the uh, other one wi’ you,” the newcomer finished as though he expected Yavan to have known. They both stared as Yavan’s eyes went wide.
“Headstrong foolish boy!” he muttered. He hurried to the small house they were occupying and threw his horse’s reins around a small tree’s branch. He had a feeling he knew exactly what his apprentice had gone and done. “Foolish!” he growled once more.
The children were hot on his heels, clamoring behind him but he paid them no heed until he wrenched the door open to find the inside ground level vacant and undisturbed.
“He’s not ‘ere!” blurted out the boy who had given the news. “They’re at Medah’s. She’s takin’ care of ’em.”
He turned around and found a crowd milling around a house on the other side of the small village. Nodding to the children, he broke into a jog, the boys close behind him.
