Menzo swallowed with difficulty, his throat tight. “So you’re saying this… Demon… Isn’t dead.” He could barely bear the idea of having failed so monumentally and felt as though the heavy shadows that shrouded the woods were made of a new impending doom, more dangerous than the previous.

“That is exactly what I’m saying,” were Yavan’s words, a stake to Menzo’s heart.

“But the village, th-the people, they-”

“-Will be fine, for the time being.” Yavan grabbed the archer’s arm, forcing the other to stop and face him. “This Mirrhe has most likely been weakened enough to be unable to harm anyone in the near future. You and I are going to ensure that safety for all is extended as long as we can manage, hopefully forever.”

Menzo let out a breath, staring first at Yavan and then to the ground. “I… I see,” he finally said in a low, tempered voice. “And… What will we tell the people?”

“That will depend entirely on what we find.”

“Do we have any idea of what might be there?” the archer asked, looking once more at the knight.

“If all goes well, a body or its bones, unmoved.”

Menzo frowned, forgetting his dread for a moment of fresh shock. “By the hells! The body may be gone? I only killed it this afternoon, it can’t already have been brought down to bones! Can it?”
