“This is Mirrhe’s doing,” he murmured. “Before he died, he was chasing Joren. I felt the earth tremble. I see now that it was from the force he used to charge through the trees. We’re looking at Mirrhe’s final path.”

This last thought brought his eyes to the mound, awe mounting at the creature’s immense strength. Yavan, undeterred, tapped his arm sharply before making straight for the beast’s remains, leaving the bowman to hurry behind him.

What lay before them left Yavan in consternation and Menzo in shock. Of the body, nothing was left to be seen but a cairn of huge bones, set carefully around the massive rib cage as though meant to build an eerie skeleton house. The skull, however, was absent.

Menzo could barely comprehend what was before him. The construction seemed alien beneath the cascade of pale light. Compelled by it, he took a step towards it when Yavan’s hand suddenly came up against his arm. The archer froze and glanced back.

“Don’t touch a thing.”

There was an odd expression upon the man’s face as he spoke that Menzo could not quite identify; it almost felt like there was worry behind the order. Frowning with a questioning expression, the bowman nodded slowly but no explanation came forth. Instead, Yavan motioned to Menzo to take the lead. After a few unsure seconds, Menzo chewed on his lower lip as he turned and slowly advanced towards the cairn. He stopped when the Vigil’s hand came up halted him once more, keeping them several paces away.
