Making the Team

Suddenly, Menzo became aware of the heavy silence in the room. His eyes flickered back to the bed and he realized that they were both looking at him expectantly. The archer opened his mouth as if to speak but he faltered, not knowing what was expected of him to say.

“Joren tells me you slew the beast. He claims you are the reason he still lives,” said Yavan, his features unreadable.

“I… suppose I am,” Menzo breathed in response. Yavan studied him a moment longer and then inclined his head once in a silent recognition that Menzo awkwardly returned.

Beside them, Joren had been growing restless and nearly exploded into words. “I was just convincing him of joining us. He’s a good shot, a bloody good one, and wasn’t even phased by the monster. I can’t think of anyone you could want on our team more than him!”

Menzo’s gaze was still locked with the elder Vigil’s’ as his innards tightened. That young man was as foolhardy as he was charismatic and Manzo felt as though he were being dragged towards some great unknown.

“Perhaps you should tell the story from the top, Joren,” said Yavan with an even tone, eyes still on Menzo.

“Please excuse me,” the latter murmured, breaking away from the severe man’s scrutiny and making for the door hastily, pausing only to spare a glance for Joren who looked at him questioningly before stepping out into the failing light.
